About

SPA Accounting was established in July 2012.  We have an experienced team working together to provide accounting and taxation services to our clients in the private, not-for-profit and government sectors.

Whilst we are a new firm, we bring with us a wealth of knowledge and experience from our time in previous mid-tier and “big 4” firms.  We see our main advantage to our clients, as being able to offer this breadth of experience and knowledge of a larger firm but with a small firm approach in terms of flexibility and tailoring of our services to meet the needs and expectations of our clients.

Our Team

Whilst we are a newly established firm, our team has a history of strong working relationships both with each other and with our clients.  We have a strong network and connections within the business community in Canberra and surrounding regions .

We currently have a team of 16 staff members, of which 12 members have experience in mid-tier and “big 4” firms.  We are a senior team with a significant amount of experience and knowledge which we believe is important in establishing ourselves in the Canberra market over the next few years as an alternative option to choosing a larger firm.

Following almost 20 years experience in the accounting and taxation profession, Sarah established 'SPA Accounting' in July 2012.

In establishing her own firm, her goal was to provide quality, professional and 'value for money' service to our clients in the private and Not-for-Profit sectors. With a significant portion of our clients being in the SME market, we are able to provide them with the experience, knowledge and expertise of a larger firm, but still with a small firm approach in terms of working with them on a more individual basis.

Previously as a Partner at WalterTurnbull, and then as a Principal at PwC following the merger in 2010, Sarah has looked after a portfolio of clients in the SME and Not-for-Profit sectors for almost 20 years. Sarah has worked with a significant amount of these clients for over 10 years assisting them with the accounting and taxation requirements on an on-going basis, as well as providing advice and guidance as required, for example when businesses were sold or new businesses purchased, refinancing or restructuring or ownership changes.

Sarah has a broad base of experience in assisting small to medium sized enterprises in their business and taxation issues. Her clients have included businesses within industries such as the legal profession, doctors, dentists, consultants, actuaries, architects, manufacturing, retail, not-for-profit organisations, primary production and building and construction. This experience has provided her with a detailed knowledge of many industries and business structures.

A significant portion of Sarah’s client base over the years has been in the Not-For-Profit (NFP) sector. She has worked with organisation’s providing internal reviews of accounting functions, due diligence reviews, implementation of accounting systems and finance processes as well as consultancy advice in relation to business and strategic planning.

Ray King

Partner

Ray has over 16 years experience in tax and accounting in Canberra.  Having previously worked for small local firms right through to the ‘Big 4’, Ray brings a variety of experience and expertise to the Canberra market using a personal and practical approach to achieving solutions for clients.

Ray specialises in business and personal tax.  He has a ‘hands on’ approach in advising clients across all areas of business and managing their taxation affairs.  Ray sits on a number of not-for-profit boards and is involved in the local Canberra community.

Zeke Ezra

Director

With over 40 years in the accounting profession, Zeke’s experience spans both Commerce and Public practice.

The latter 30 years have been spent dealing with a large number of small to medium sized businesses  providing business and taxation advice. The majority of his career has been as a Principal in a medium sized accounting practice and was Managing Partner of that firm for over 7 years. Working closely with his clients often as part of their management team has enable him to be well versed in running businesses from the inside.  He has also facilitated many purchases, sales and mergers of businesses.  Zeke has guided business owners through the business succession path as they approached retirement, an event many small business owners do not prepare well for.

His clients have included many spectrums of business such as Transport, IT, Retail, Building companies, Professional practices (Legal & Medical) , Fuel distributors and  Primary Producers to name a few.

Zeke embraces a hand on approach to client’s affairs and enjoys seeing organisations achieve their goals.

Zeke has served in various roles with ACT Government and Commonwealth Government organisations.

Mark French

Director

With over 15 years experience in the finance industry, a change in career path saw Mark commence work with WalterTurnbull in 2007 and then with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) following the merger in 2010.

Prior to this, Mark worked for the Commonwealth Bank of Australia in a Risk Management role in the Corporate & Business Service Division.  This role saw Mark responsible for the assessment, control and decision making of commercial finance and franchising loan applications in the SME space.

Experience gained from both the accounting profession and finance industry has resulted in Mark being able to undertake a number of key business advisor roles to various private sector clients within Canberra and surrounding areas.

Mark has provided assistance clients from a broad range of industries and professions including:

Katrina Wheatstone

Senior Manager

Katrina spends considerable time providing assistance to small and medium sized business clients across a broad range of industries.  This role involves assisting clients with tax compliance, accounting function reviews, implementation of accounting systems and processes, preparation of financial statements, financial projections and cashflow management, critical tax-related advice and establishing efficient financial reporting systems.

Katrina’s experience and knowledge has included acting as assistant financial controller for a large group of pharmaceutical clients. This role included supervision of a dedicated accounting team, preparing of management accounts, payroll management and tax compliance including, income tax, fringe benefits tax (FBT), Goods and Services Tax (GST) and payroll tax.

Mark Ruffy

Mark commenced his career working for WalterTurnbull in 2008, on completion of his degree. He then worked for PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) following the merger in 2010.

Mark has gained a considerable amount of experience and knowledge acting as assistant financial controller for a construction client. This role included supervision and training of the internal accounting team, preparation of management accounts, payroll management and tax compliance including, fringe benefits tax (FBT), Goods and Services Tax (GST) and payroll tax.

Mark has provided assistance to clients from a broad range of industries and professions including:

Sharon Hourigan

Sharon has over 15 years business and accounting experience gained from working in private business and then over 10 years experience in mid-tier and ‘big 4’ accounting practises.  Sharon worked for Walter Turnbull who later merged with PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2010

Sharon provides accounting and taxation assistance to various small and medium sized clients including financial statement preparation, tax compliance, accounting function reviews and assistance.  Her experience has been gained working across a number of industries including franchises, primary production, retail, hospitality, not-for-profit organisations and training organisations.

Roxanne O’Sullivan

Roxanne is a Chartered Accountant with five years experience working in business services.  She commenced her career working for WalterTurnbull in 2008 as a trainee whilst completing her degree at the University of Canberra.  WalterTurnbull merged with PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) on 1 July 2010, Roxanne spent two and a half years at PwC before starting at Sarah Palic & Associates.

Roxanne has a varied base of experience in assisting small to medium sized enterprises in their business and taxation issues.  During her time in business services Roxanne has worked with businesses within industries such as the legal profession, not-for-profit organisations, retail, building and construction, professional services, transportation and high net worth individuals and family groups.  This experience has provided her with an array of knowledge of many business types as well as providing clients with support around preparation of management accounts, payroll management and tax compliance including, income tax, Goods and Services Tax (GST) and payroll tax.

Amanda Talman

Client Service Officer / Executive Assistant

Amanda joined SPA Accounting bringing with her over 15 years of extensive senior administrative experience having served as executive assistant to Partners and Principals of Walter Turnbull who later merged with PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2010.

Following changes in her professional career path over the past 15 years which included the property and banking industry, Amanda has extensive client and office experience including management and sales.

Karen Evans

Office Manager / Executive Assistant

Karen joined Sarah Palic & Associates bringing with her over 20 years of extensive senior administrative experience having served as executive assistant to Principals and Directors of Walter Turnbull who later merged with PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2010.

Karen has worked in many administrative roles since graduating from the University of Canberra. She has had administrative and accounts rolls in both residential and commercial real estate; and a small consulting business.

Karen’s current role is as Office Manager & Executive Assistant.

Renee Pellerano

Manager

Renee has over ten years of experience as a business advisor in accounting, finance and taxation.

Renee comes to SPA Accounting following a career with WalterTurnbull as their corporate Financial Accountant, and then with the Private Clients business of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) following the merger in 2010.

Prior to this, Renee has worked in various industries in a corporate finance role, which involved the supervision of accounting teams, preparation of management accounts and tax compliance as well as preparation for external audits. Renee brings extensive experience in management of accounting operations, financial reporting, financial evaluation and analysis and process review.
